When autumn arrives, Mother Nature exhales in countless warm shades and nuances. Her breath softens, and the sap quietly returns to the roots. The soil gathers its strength in stillness, wrapping seeds and roots in a gentle darkness where life can rest and dream. Beneath the fallen leaves, the earth slowly begins turning inward, weaving the invisible threads of next spring’s renewal.
It’s my favourite time of the year.
Laura Jaworski, a contemporary author and poet known for her evocative reflections on nature, beautifully says:
“Autumn is the poem nature writes in gold”.
Spending just another fall afternoon in my “ocean office”, an article in the magazine “HAPPINEZ” inspired me to contemplate on the fact that, as human beings, we are like a field — we cannot constantly harvest without, earlier or later, leaching out. It is urgently necessary to lie fallow from time to time.
Fall is a beautiful reminder that letting parts of ourselves quietly rest can represent a sacred rhythm of renewal. There’s a surrender in not knowing, not having to sort out everything here and now. Our inner field rests so that new life can take root later. There’s no need for us to know yet what will be, what our next inner spring will bring.
During this time of hibernation and pause, well hidden on the inside, a pearl may begin forming slowly, invisibly, luminous layer by layer, in silence — if you give it time and dedication.
The Taoist Reinoud Eleveld refers to this subtle inner process as “Pearl Awareness”. It’s the cultivation of an inner stillness and presence, where the soul connects with reality in its simplest and purest form. This practice invites us to gently turn our attention inward, nurturing the quiet center within. For years, upon waking in the morning, Reinoud placed his hands on his navel — that place symbolically connected to the womb, where everything was still one. “When you give this point your attention in the morning, you awaken it. By doing this daily, a small new layer grows upon this little pearl each day”, he was cited in the “HAPPINEZ” magazine.
I think autumn is a perfect time to start cultivating your own “Pearl Awareness”… But this is just one of many ways to let something luminous emerge from the soil you leave resting for a while — until something new wants to be born.
If you feel like, you can create a little fall altar with treasures found in nature, light a candle, drink a cup of ceremonial cacao and meditate on the idea of letting your inner field lie fallow for a period of time.
How do you feel about “doing nothing” towards a certain goal or out of a sense of duty for some days — or even weeks?
If you get really quiet and listen to those inner fairies “weaving the invisible threads of next spring’s renewal” deep within your inner realms, are you able to get some glimpses about what they might prepare? ✧⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙ ˙ॱ⋅.˳˳.⋅ॱ˙ ˙ॱᐧ.˳˳.⋅ ˙✧
Just for a moment, envision yourself several years from now, having cultivated your inner pearl lovingly. What, do you think, is the wisdom it would reveal to you?
