A few years ago, I heard about mysteriously intriguing women called “Ama” for the first time, and their existence evoked a longing in me…
Ama means “Sea Women” in Japanese. These incredible female free divers have practiced their craft for over 2,000 years. Without the use of modern diving equipment, they descend — often into cold waters — to collect sea treasures like abalone, seaweed and pearls. What’s most remarkable is not just their breath-holding ability or endurance, but their deep, intuitive connection with the sea and the quiet, almost spiritual grace with which they work. Ama women embody resilience, simplicity, sisterhood and a humble, yet powerful kind of feminine strength — flowing with the tides, respectful of nature’s rhythms.
To begin your writing journey, I thought this letter might inspire you to dive deeply, knowing that what you’ll find within the depths of your own being is worth being brought to the surface…
“To the one standing at the shore, ready to witness her own unfolding, and willing to come back home to herself…
I write to you from the place where the sea breathes secrets. Warm thoughts and blessings for you and your path arise from beneath the surface, where time slows, and the outer world becomes quiet.
I am an Ama, a woman of the water. My life has been shaped by the rhythm of the waves, by the slow, conscious breath I carry with me into the deep, and certainly by all the treasures I find hidden in darkness — pearls born of pressure, silence and the quiet benevolence of time.
My kind does not rush. We never take more than we need. We take time to listen deeply… And when we dive, it is not only to gather, but to remember what it means to trust the unknown, to hold your breath and not panic and to return with something rare, but real.
I am writing to you now because I sense you have been called too… Not to the sea perhaps, but more so to the depths of your own being. There is something waiting below… Maybe it is a memory, a longing, a truth you haven’t touched in a while. You do not need to know what it is yet. Only this: when the time is right, dare to close your eyes, hold your breath and descend.
The surface will still be there when you return. But you, my sister of courage, will not be the same.
Come… Dare… The pearl is waiting.
With love and encouragement from one who dives deeply”
Will you follow the calling?…
